RGG Studio’s Yakuza series is getting a brand new name and character. The new lead is Ichiban Kasuga. And there are three new games on the way in 2023. Find out which ones you should look forward to.
RGG Studio’s Yakuza series rebrands to like a dragon
The Like a Dragon series is a media franchise owned by Sega that was previously known as the Yakuza series outside of Japan. The series’ gameplay combines beat ’em up, action-adventure, and turn-based strategy genres. Its next installment, Like a Dragon 8, will be the series’ largest game to date. It will be available on PS4 and Xbox One, and will include a new side story adventure.
The Yakuza series is known in the western world as Yakuza, but in Japan, it’s known as Ryu Ga Gotoku, or “like a dragon.” In recent years, the series has changed names several times, and RGG Studio’s recent announcements suggest the move is for brand consistency. It also aims to better reflect the Japanese name.
The upcoming Yakuza franchise is set to rebrand to Like a Dragon outside of Japan. The new name is a more accurate translation of the Japanese title, Ryu Ga Gotoku, which translates to “Like a Dragon.” It’s set to launch on PS5 in 2024, Xbox Series XS, and PC. In addition to Yakuza 8, Like a Dragon will also release a remake of its first spin-off, Ishin.
Ichiban Kasuga is the new lead character
The new lead character of Yakuza Series Rebranding to Like a Dragon is Ichiban Kasuga. His story revolves around friendship and overcoming adversity. Although he does encounter hardships, Ichiban always maintains his integrity and faces each challenge head on. His friends are a huge part of his success and he pours his heart out to them.
Compared to Kiryu, Ichiban Kasuga is very different in personality. His cheerful attitude and sincere desire to help people makes him a refreshing change to the other characters. He is the perfect fit for Like a Dragon and will hopefully help the series move forward.
Like a Dragon is a rebranded name for the Yakuza series, and the next game is scheduled to be released in 2024. The new name is meant to more closely align the series with its Japanese counterpart.
Three new games are planned for 2023
RGG Studio has announced the upcoming release of Like a Dragon: Ishin, an action game reworking of the popular Yakuza series. This game will be set in 19th century Japan. Like a Dragon: Ishin will release in 2023.
Like a Dragon: Ishin will be released in the west in 2023. The game is set to be released on the PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, Xbox One, and PC platforms. The PlayStation 4 and Xbox One version will be released in 2023. The Xbox One and Windows versions will follow in 2024. Like a Dragon: Ishin will also be released on the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
Like a Dragon: Ishin will focus on Kiryu Kazuma, the main character of the original Yakuza game series. The game will have action-brawling gameplay similar to Assassin’s Creed and Mirage. The new game will also be more substantial than the Lost Judgment Kaito Files DLC, which took players seven to ten hours to complete.
