Rooster Mitchell
The fifth season of TOP Gun starred Rooster Mitchell as a pilot on an ill-fated mission. Maverick and his fellow pilot, Rooster, were attempting to hit a uranium enrichment plant when Rooster was shot down by a missile. Rooster ejected from his F-18, but not before a missile hit him. Maverick meanwhile, hijacked an old F-14A Tomcat and went on to shoot down two Su-57 aircraft. Eventually, Maverick achieved flying ace status by shooting down five enemy aircraft.
In TOP Gun: Maverick 2022, Rooster is assigned to an attack mission on an unsanctioned uranium enrichment plant. The plant is defended by SA-3 Goa SAMs and GPS jammers. At first, Maverick is convinced the plant is defended by Su-57 fighters, but then realizes that Maverick’s mission is to train a small group of recent TOPGUN graduates.

Rooster’s mother, Carole, tries to prevent her son from following in his footsteps. In fact, she tried to talk Maverick out of the decision, but he didn’t hear her. Maverick, however, decides to block his son’s application to the Naval Academy. In addition, Maverick realizes that Rooster is his guardian angel.
While Maverick is still grappling with the death of his wingman Goose, he must choose a mission partner from his class. In the process, he reveals that he pulled Rooster out of flight school when he promised his mother that he wouldn’t allow his son to become a pilot. After working together, the two men reconcile.
The film’s release date has been postponed a couple of times. Initially, the film was supposed to be released during Christmas 2020, but delays were caused by several reasons, including a Covid-19 pandemic and complicated production. Paramount also wants the film to get a proper theatrical rollout. Despite the lengthy delay, the movie is now set for Thanksgiving and Fourth of July in 2022.
As a sequel to the 1986 film, Top Gun: Maverick is sure to be a hit. Tom Cruise and Val Kilmer are back as the pilots and this time, the film is much more diverse than the first one. It also features two Black pilots, one Latin American, and the first woman pilot.
